This map appears above the title page of Chapter III of the Plan of Chicago. It was specially prepared to demonstrate Chicago's "location with regard to the seven central states," i.e., Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, not to mention the rest of Illinois. The red lines emphasize how well-connected Chicago was to smaller cities in the region that served both as markets and sources of material.
