Will County, 37 miles SW of the Loop. Construction of the Illinois & Michigan Canal after 1836, the Illinois Central Railroad in 1851, and a railroad stop in 1879 drew laborers to Manhattan (especially Irish immigrants). In 1886, the village incorporated so that it could license saloons. The population of 1,117 in 1960 grew steadly to 3,330 in 2000.
