Proposed Improvements in Calumet River, 1953
By the mid-twentieth century, growth had slowed in the Calumet Region. The City of Chicago prepared plans for revitalization of the region after World War II. Anticipating the completion of the St. Lawrence Seaway, enlargement of the Cal-Sag channel were planned to allow larger ships to move directly onto the Sanitary and Ship Canal in what came to be known as the Great-Lakes-to-the-Gulf Waterway.
