McHenry County, 52 miles NW of the Loop. Settling on fertile prairies in the 1840s, Yankee farmers named this area after nearby oak groves. For over a century, the community remained a collection of houses around an 1859 school and an 1895 general store. In 1995, fearing annexation the village of Wonder Lake, residents voted to incorporate. The population was 244 in 2000.
