Elwood, IL

Loop. Area residents incorporated the village in 1873 and established a Baptist church five years later. Elwood grew modestly until World War II, when the federal government built a 3,000acre munitions plant with 12,000 jobs. An explosion at the plant killed 48 workers in 1942.
