Grundy County, 52 miles SW of the Loop. Named after the coal synonym “black diamond,” the area attracted miners by the early 1870s. In 1883 tragedy struck when a mine shaft flooded, killing 74 men. Incorporated in 1895, the village nearly disappeared after coal mining ended in the early 1900s. The town reincorporated in 1949 and had a population of 1,393 at the end of the century.
