West Exchange Operating Room of the Chicago Telephone Company, n.d. | ||||
Switchboard operators direct calls at the Chicago Telephone Company's West Exchange Operating Room. Boys operated the first crude switchboards brought to Chicago by the Illinois Telephone Company in 1877. In 1878 Isabel Maunsell was hired by Bell Company as the first female switchboard operator.
