Estupendo Festival, 1937 | ||||
The "Fantastic Festival" announced in this flyer commemorated the Mexican Revolution. Sponsored by an organization of Mexican steelworkers, the event provided an opportunity to combine musical entertainment, social activity, political activism, and labor solidarity. The latter was particularly relevant in November 1937, just six months after Chicago police clashed with striking steelworkers near the Republic Steel mill on Chicago's Southeast Side in an event that became known as the Memorial Day Massacre.
