The Montauk Block was located from 1882 to 1902 on Monroe Street near the northwest corner of Monroe and Dearborn. It was the first major commercial building developed by the architectural firm of Burnham & Root and, at 130 feet (10 stories), it is regarded by many as the first "skyscraper."
